Logbook servicing explained

At its core, Logbook servicing is scheduled servicing, following a program set out by the vehicle manufacturer. This servicing scheme is typically carried out at either specific time or kilometer intervals.

The particular servicing schedule varies between manufacturers and even differs between models from the same marquee but often covers items like oil, filters, certain components like water pumps, serpentine and timing belts, spark plugs and other small parts.

The idea behind logbook recorded servicing is basically to have a recorded history of what was done to a vehicle and when. This is to help retain warranty on new vehicles as well as keep track of when servicing was completed. A lot of components in your vehicle have specific service intervals. An oil filter may be specified to last 15,000kms for example. Most timing chains are recommended to be assessed or replaced at 100,000kms.

How often do I need logbook servicing?

Every manufacturer has different recommended service intervals. For most vehicles, 10,000-15,000km average although some highly strung performance vehicles may have shorter intervals.

If you’re the sort of driver who doesn’t put many kms on your vehicle, servicing may be done at time internals instead. 6 month services are typically common amongst most manufacturers.

Information on how often your particular vehicle requires servicing can be found in the user manual or from a qualified mechanic workshop.

Why do I need logbook servicing?

When purchasing a new vehicle, or a secondhand vehicle that is still under warranty, it is best to adhere to the manufacturer-specified schedule in order to retain vehicle warranty.

Generally logbook servicing can be seen as pre-emptive vehicle maintenance. On top of parts replacing, it aims to ensure your vehicle has regular inspections. Anything seen during a routine logbook service can be addressed before it becomes a big issue.
