Wheel alignments explained

Vehicle having a wheel alignment performed

During a wheel alignment, all 4 wheels on the vehicle will be measured to ensure they are facing in the same direction. A wheel alignment is essential for maximising fuel economy, as well as getting the very most life out of your tyres.

What is a wheel alignment?

Every car has a small degree of adjustment in the suspension that affects which angles the wheels are facing (not counting regular steering movement).

The purpose of a wheel alignment is to ensure that the direction of the wheels are within the manufacturers’ specifications.

A wheel alignment will also improve vehicle stability under heavy braking and make the car more settled in an emergency situation.

During an alignment, we will check the:

  • Camber: side to side tilt of the wheels looking from front on
  • Toe: wheels pointing in or out, as viewed from above
  • Thrust angles and caster

We’ll also assess for worn or damaged components at the same time.

How often should a wheel alignment be performed?

Generally, a wheel alignment should be performed every time you get your tyres rotated. Tyre rotations are typically scheduled for 10,000km intervals. Sticking to a tyre rotation schedule means you’ll be preventing uneven wear, which will assist you in getting the most from your tyres.

It is good practice to get a wheel alignment whenever you put new wheels or tyres on your vehicle. Since having the right equipment makes the job simple and easy and your vehicle is already in the workshop - it just makes sense.

How do I know when my vehicle needs a wheel alignment?

Aside from scheduled alignments, other reasons you might consider booking your car in for an alignment include:

  • Hitting a pothole, which can knock a vehicle out of alignment or potentially damage suspension
  • Striking a curb while parking, if done hard enough this can also damage suspension
  • If your car no longer drives straight while the steering wheel is straight
  • If the car pulls to one side during normal driving
  • If you notice a sudden difference in the way the car ‘feels’ on the road

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, chances are something isn’t right. Be sure to book into Donnellans the Tyremen today, as it may mean that there’s an issue with your suspension or your wheels and tyres.

How much does an alignment cost?

Wheel alignments can vary in price depending on the size and type of vehicle. Some smaller cars typically only need the front wheels assessed and minor adjustments made, if anything.

A front-end wheel alignment for a small car typically costs less than most people spend on coffee per week. Whereas a comprehensive wheel alignment for a modified 4x4, for example, can cost about the same as a nice dinner for two at a restaurant.
